Headcanon Timeline and History
There is unfortunately not a lot of information on Billy's background before he met Goody. Byung Hun Lee stated in an interview "Actually, Billy was an indentured servant, and I couldn’t be patient, so I killed two of my masters and ran away" (source) and that's the extent of it. Furthermore, with director Antoine Fuqua referring to Billy as "the Korean character" (source), it throws a few wrenches into historical timeline.

Billy comes from the historical era of 1860s-1870s. This means that his canon is subject to era-appropriate racism and homophobia, which he will touch on as they are important to him. Furthermore, Billy does smoke opium-laced cigarettes, which, while common for the era, is considered drug usage by today's standards. Let me know if this is uncomfortable for you.
